| How does one become a Sewapanthi?
Guide
Akin to all other Sampardas, the
gurdev-shishya institution is essential for the successful
transmission of vidiya (knowledge) and tradition. Therefore
all Sewapanthi sadhus have both a parampra (lineage back to
the Guru) and a gurdev (mentor).

To become a Sewapanthi, the individual
must be accepted as a chela on the condition of leading a
virakat lifestyle. For more information on other aspects of
the Sewapanthi lifestyle see the Santan di rehit. A Sewapanthi
sadhu therefore cannot be grishti (householder or married).
On becoming a Sewapanthi the chela
will be given a ‘Jharroo’ (brush) by their gurdev
to symbolise the seva they must now go and carry out.
Alongwith a gurdev, the Ishtadev
for a Sewapanthi is Sri Guru Granth Sahib alone. Importance
is not given to any other. Therefore, akin to other samparday
there exist the three levels of Guru in the form of aatmdev,
ishtadev and gurdev.

earned their keep through making rope and ink (hence the renowned
adhanshahi ink).
